Stipends are set by the University of Utah and increase every year. Resident & Fellow (Housestaff) employment is managed through the Graduate Medical Education Office.

The following trainee stipend schedule is proposed for the academic year 2024‐2025:

The following trainee benefits are expected to be:

Paid Leave

  • Three weeks (15 working days) of paid annual vacation, and one week (5 working days) of paid annual personal/professional development time which must be scheduled with the approval of the Program Director. Both vacation and personal/professional development time is non‐accruing.


  • Choice of health insurance plans, including hospitalization coverage – premium costs are shared between the Hospital and the trainee for health coverage for the trainee and family.
  • Group dental insurance for trainee and family at a nominal charge per month.
  • Group term life insurance up to the salary amount but not to exceed $25,000 at no charge. Additional life insurance may be purchased by the trainee.
  • Disability insurance for specialty‐specific occupation with benefit equal to approximately 66.6% of monthly earnings up to $3,000/month (less benefits from other sources) and built‐in cost‐of‐living rider.
  • Basic policy paid by Hospital. Additional individual coverage may be purchased by the trainee.
  • Malpractice insurance is provided by the hospital for professional activities that are an approved part of the training program.

  • After the trainee completes one year of training in our program, spouses qualify for a 50% tuition reduction. Trainees qualify for reduced-cost season passes at some Utah ski areas.
  • All trainees have access to networked computers, medline, and e-mail.
  • Recognizing that depression, anxiety, substance abuse, or marital and family stress can occur during training, the Department of Pediatrics and the School of Medicine provide preventive, consultative and referral services through the Employee Assistance Program. Mental health counseling is available through the Department of Psychiatry.

  • Meals and Housing

    Meals are provided to on-call residents required to spend the night in the hospitals as part of their training. Call rooms are available in the hospitals for the on-call residents. 

    Nearly all residents choose to live in nearby homes or apartments. Modest prices in the Salt Lake Valley enable many residents to purchase houses or condominiums.

    Education, Licensing and Research Expenses

    All residents have an education fund to be used over their training years at their discretion for meetings, books, journals, and other educational materials.

    • MEDICINE-PEDIATRIC RESIDENTS - Book Funds through Internal Medicine

    The costs of DEA license, Utah medical license, and medical license renewal fees, are paid by University Hospital and the Department of Pediatrics. Residents are encouraged to participate in individual research projects and to attend scientific meetings. Up to five days of educational leave per year may be taken with program director approval. Expenses incurred in association with scientific presentations by a resident at a meeting are paid by the department.


    Parking is provided free of charge to Pediatric, Child Neurology Med/Peds and Triple Board Residents in the parking structure adjacent to PCH.

    Medical Records, Library and Computer Access

    All residents have access to a fully staffed pediatric medical library at Primary Children's Hospital. Medical records at Primary Children's Hospital are becoming fully electronic. A centralized database allows residents to access medical information on all patients seen at Intermountain Healthcare clinics and hospitals within the state of Utah. Email accounts are provided for all residents through the University of Utah.

  • Meal Allowance

    Meal Money will be electronically programmed onto the fellows's Primary Children's ID Badge quarterly throughout the academic year. Meal money that has been allocated to Fellows may be redeemed for food, using their PCH badge, at Primary Children's food locations.  Including, but not limited to:

    1. Aspen Park Café - Primary Children's Hospital
    2. Treehouse Café - Primary Children's Hospital
    3. Mountainside Café-  Primary Children's Eccles Outpatient Services Money will be electronically programmed onto the resident's University ID card


    Parking is provided free of charge to Pediatric Fellows in the Primary Children's Eccles Outpatient Services parking structure adjacent to Primary Children's Hospital. 

    Educational Funds

    Fellows may receive educational funds based on the specific terms and conditions outlined by their respective fellowship programs. The amount of the educational funds varies, and is typically determined by the program's policies and funding arrangements. Prospective fellows are encouraged to refer to their program's specific guidelines and information regarding educational funds.
