I will always remember the glimmer of hope in patients' eyes when they learn about studies that could help them manage their mental health
My experience in the program has been immensely enriching as I pursue my goal of becoming a physician. I have come to appreciate the critical role of effective communication among peers and researchers to enroll eligible participants and have developed a keen attention to detail in the screening process. Working on these studies has allowed me to make a meaningful impact in the lives of patients and their families. Providing food bags and information about resources has been incredibly rewarding, and I will always remember the glimmer of hope in patients' eyes when they learn about studies that could help them manage their mental health. I have also gained a good understanding of research ethics and the importance of safeguarding participants. Additionally, I have been fortunate to work alongside inspiring role models to advocate for my peers within the program. I wholeheartedly recommend this program to anyone eager to make a difference in their community and to those who value the role of research in advancing the medical field! – Nathaly H.
Through my participation in the AcA program, I have gained valuable clinical experience that has confirmed my passion for pursuing a career in medicine. Often, undergraduate students have an idea of what they want to do upon graduation but feel they need “real world” experience to solidify that idea or begin seeking another path. Conducting clinical research in a well-regarded pediatric hospital and working alongside nurses, residents, and attending physicians is invaluable. The program has allowed me to learn how the Emergency Department functions, understand the role of each member of the care team, and appreciate the importance of clinical research in the advancement of medicine. These experiences have provided me with clarity about my future pursuits, and for that, I am very grateful! – Mia K.

relationships formed with Emergency Department attending physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other staff, the community and cohort of students formed is unlike anything I have experienced in my 4 years
This program has provided me with so much more than I ever could have imagined when I initially applied. On top of the face-to-face patient and family interactions, and relationships formed with Emergency Department attending physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other staff, the community and cohort of students formed is unlike anything I have experienced in my 4 years at the University of Utah. Connecting with students and leadership teams who share similar interests and aspirations allows relationships to grow and progress within and beyond the few semesters you are in the program. For this reason alone, I would recommend the program to anyone interested. Still, when you combine all of that with the exposure to research and the knowledge you will gain during your time as an Academic Associate, joining this program will be an experience you will remember for the rest of your career. – Maddie M.
