WELCOME FROM THE PEDIATRIC RHEUMATOLOGY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM LEADERSHIP
Dear Prospective Applicants,
Congratulations on getting to this exciting point of applying for a Fellowship in Pediatric Rheumatology and thank you for your interest in furthering your training at the University of Utah. We are excited to share key aspects of our fellowship program with you.
Our program is committed to excellence in training the next generation of pediatric rheumatologists. Our goal is to train our fellows to be outstanding clinicians and researchers allowing you to have an exceptional career that fits your unique path. Our program is a 3-year ACGME accredited program aimed at training fellows in innovative, evidenced based medicine. Our patient catchment area includes a substantial part of the Intermountain West, which provides a vibrant clinical learning environment.
Our rheumatology team includes 6 rheumatologists, 2 nurse practitioners, 2 triage nurses, and 3 research coordinators. Our mission is to provide outstanding clinical care, advance research, and create an excellent educational program in our rapidly changing world of medicine. Our curriculum includes journal clubs, Cassidy board review, didactic lectures, clinical research courses, immunology curriculum, invited speakers, and combined multi-disciplinary conferences with specialties such as nephrology, gastroenterology, and musculoskeletal radiology. In addition, our fellows will attend the weekly University of Utah Adult Rheumatology Fellowship Program didactic lecture series and the Department of Pediatrics weekly Fellow's School, and weekly Pediatric Grand Rounds. Fellows will also attend national rheumatology academic conferences such as the American College of Rheumatology and Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance Annual Meetings. Our division and its members are actively involved in CARRA and believe strongly in its mission to further collaborative research to advance the care and improve the lives of our patients. CARRA also has programming specifically for Pediatric Rheumatology Fellows. We look forward to introducing our fellows to this amazing research organization.
From a clinical perspective our fellows will experience Pediatric Rheumatology continuity clinics as well as general rheumatology clinic, transition clinic, rheumatology-dermatology clinic, and adult rheumatology clinic. Our fellows will have the opportunity to work closely with many other related subspecialties including ophthalmology (uveitis specialists), musculoskeletal radiology, nephrology, autoimmune neurology, pediatric dermatology, gastroenterology, and pediatric otolaryngology.
During the first year of the program, fellows will hone their basic clinical skills in rheumatology with both inpatient and outpatient experience. They will also have time to explore research opportunities and identify research mentors. The second- and third-year program will be predominantly dedicated to their clinical research project while continuing to hone their clinical skills. There are wide variety of research opportunities that our fellows can harness to create their research project at the University of Utah. Some of these opportunities include working with the Utah Population Database, ARUP (a world-famous pathology laboratory), and CARRA.
We look forward to meeting you and hope we get the privilege to guide you through your rheumatology fellowship. We are interested in making all our fellows' experience unique to their individual passion for rheumatology. We encourage you to apply to our program here and to discover all the opportunities a fellowship within our program can provide to nurture your future career in pediatric rheumatology.
