    Pediatric Neurology Grand Rounds Lecture Series:

    Grand Rounds occur Wednesdays at noon. We invite speakers on a variety of topics relevant to practicing pediatric neurologists. Recurring series within Pediatric Neurology Grand Rounds include:

    • M&M:

    • We review morbidity and mortality cases to analyze medical errors using a system-based approach, identify error reduction strategies, foster a culture of patient safety, and improve teamwork and communication.  
    • Journal Club:

    • We review articles selected from the current literature as well as the 'classic' publications in pediatric and adult neurology.
    • Case Conference:

    • Attendings and residents present either unknown or interesting pediatric neurology cases for discussion.

    Pediatric Neurology Boot Camp Lecture Series:

    Boot Camp lectures occur early in the academic year on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays at noon.  These lectures are presented by attendings and cover essential pediatric neurology introductory topics.

    Pediatric Neurology Sign Out Conference:

    Sign out conference occurs every Friday at noon.  During this conference the 3 inpatient teams (floor team, ICU team, and epilepsy monitoring unit team) review their current patients to ensure appropriate continuity of care over the weekend as well as to discuss in more detail interesting cases.  Team members also share clinical pearls from the week.

    Pediatric Neuroradiology Conference:

    Every Friday morning our pediatric neuroradiologists lead a teaching conference. The neurology ward team submits interesting inpatient cases for review, and residents and attendings submit outpatient cases. Often, providers from other related fields - Genetics, Neurosurgery, Pediatrics etc. - attend this conference to discuss interesting or unknown cases.

    Pediatric EEG Reading Conference:

    Every Thursday at noon we have an EEG reading conference. Our epileptologists review EEGs from the prior week, including normal and abnormal findings.

    Pediatric Epilepsy Management Conference:

    A multidisciplinary team of  pediatric epileptologists, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons and psychologists review the current epilepsy surgery candidates once a week on Monday mornings. Results of long term EEG monitoring, imaging, and neuropsychological testing are presented and reviewed in the clinical context of the patient's epilepsy.

    Pediatric Neuromuscular Case Conference:

    The pediatric neuromuscular team meets once a month on the 2nd Monday of the month to discuss interesting neuromuscular patients and discuss next steps in diagnosis and/or management.

    Pediatric Neuromuscular Journal Club:

    The pediatric neuromuscular team meets once a month on the 4th Monday of the month for a journal club.

    Pediatric Vascular Conference:

    This conference is held monthly on the 3rd Friday of the month at 9am. Vascular neurology and endovascular neurosurgery meet to discuss pediatric stroke/vascular cases.

    Neuroimmunology Radiology Conference:

    Every second and fourth Wednesday of the month we have a neuroimmunology radiology conference where our adult and pediatric neuromuscular specialists present content on neuroimmune disorders and neuroimaging.  

     

    Noon Conferences:

    The conferences include didactic lectures spanning all subspecialties, anatomy reviews, case discussions, education or communication topics, as well as involvement, development, equal access, and Leadership (IDEAL) curriculum. The lectures are led by teaching faculty or residents. 

    • 12:00 PM, Monday/Tuesday/Thursdays, Weekly

    Grand Rounds:

    Departmental educational meetings with local or national speakers in Neurology and other subspecialties.  Also included is a monthly morbidity and mortality (M&M) conference.

    Neurovascular Case Conference:

    Discussion of complex vascular cases with active imaging review by a neuroradiologist. Attended by faculty, fellows, and residents of the Division of Vascular Neurology, the Department of Neurosurgery, and the Department of Neuroradiology.

    • 4:00 PM, Tuesdays, Weekly 

    Neuroimmunology Conference:

    Autoimmune and neuroimmunology cases presented and discussed with active imaging review. Attended by faculty of the Division of Neuroimmunology, faculty and fellows of the Department of Neuroradiology, and fellows of Autoimmune Neurology.

    Subspecialty Conferences:

    • Cognitive case review: attended by cognitive specialists and neuropsychologists
      Epilepsy: A weekly EEG review conference of interesting cases
      Epilepsy: A monthly surgical planning conference
      Neuropathology: A monthly neuropathology conference reviewing muscle and nerve biopsies with neuromuscular and neuropathology specialists
      Neurocritical Care M&M: A monthly NCC focused M&M conference
      Tumor Board: A weekly conference attended by specialists in neuro-oncology, neuroradiology, oncology, and neurosurgery

    Pediatrics Residency Lecture Series: 

    Pediatric Residency Lecture Series are held throughout the week and include the following:

    Morning Report

    • Tuesdays and Fridays (8:00am)

    • Cases presented by residents
    • Advocacy, Global/Rural, and Triple Board Conferences

    Board Prep/Task Trainer Wednesdays

    Noon Conference

    • 3-4x weekly (12:00pm)

    • Students, Resident and Faculty
    • Topics in primary care pediatrics, pediatric subspecialties, practice management, ethics and medical informatics;
    • Morbidity and Mortality Conference - monthly conference provides an in depth education regarding pathophysiology, management, outcomes, and quality
    • Resident Town Hall Meeting - monthly meeting with Program Director and Program Leadership
    • Resident Wellness - regular wellness lecture topics with faculty and activities for residents

    Intern Lecture Series

    • Wednesday (12:00pm)

    • Specific topics for the first-year residents
    • Provides case-based teaching that explores communication skills, use of clinical 
tools and resources, professionalism, and learning styles

    Pediatrics Grand Rounds:

    The Pediatric Grand Rounds weekly lecture series covers cutting-edge research and practical clinical applications, for hospital and community-based pediatricians, registered nurses, and other physicians and practitioners who care for children of any age. 

    • Thursdays 8:00am (September - May)

    Pediatric Research in Progress:

    The Departmental Research in Progress (RIP) series highlights ongoing research efforts from across the Department. Speakers range from fellows and postdocs to senior faculty. RIP offers an opportunity to learn of collaborative opportunities and provide support and feedback for faculty and trainees. 

    Resident Meeting

    Child neurology residents meet every month for lunch with the program director and assistant program director to discuss any program issues, answer questions, etc.

    Regional and National Meetings

    As clinical obligations allow, Child Neurology residents attend two regional conferences, Western Intermountain Neurological Organization and Brainstorm conference. Residents can be invited to present their research at these conferences or at the yearly Department of Neurology Baringer symposium. Residents are encouraged to submit their work to national conferences such as the Child Neurology Society annual meeting.
