Faculty Engagement
Engaged faculty in pediatrics are easy to recognize.
They lead high-performing teams with shared purpose, excellent communication and optimal psychological safety. Engagement grows when we experience a balance of job responsibilities and resources, interests and talents, control and flexibility.
Tools to develop our collective engagement include:
- Leadership training
- Women in Pediatrics
- Facilitated communication with individuals and groups
- Peer support and coaching programs
- Recommended readings for individual development
I invite you to contribute to our culture of trust, respect, fairness and professional fulfillment. Please send your requests, suggestions, and feedback anytime.
I look forward to hearing from you; together, we can be one part of the burnout solution.
Warm regards,
Nancy Murphy, MD, FAAP, FAAPMR

Women in Pediatrics – Faculty
The Women in Pediatrics (WIP) Faculty Steering Committee met in October 2024 and warmly welcomed new members. We talked about ways to have a broad, inclusive and meaningful impact in our department. We’re taking a solid, grass-roots approach by connecting small groups of faculty informally to strengthen our community. We invite all faculty to join in the conversations about WIP — by deepening our understanding of the experiences and perspectives of each other, we can forward the action that supports our professional culture. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” -ancient African proverb

Collaborative Conversations and Coaching
Coaching is an evidence-based intervention that promotes physician well-being. Unlike mentoring, advising and sponsoring, coaching is client centered. It is a process of inquiry, accountability and support. Through thoughtful questioning, the coach guides the client to identify and implement strategies that support their professional and personal goals. Clients are whole, creative and resourceful; they know the answers. The coach facilitates clarity and awareness. Coaching is associated with improved wellness, work-life balance, quality of life, resilience, and professional engagement.
In January 2025, the Dept of Pediatrics launched the PEDS (Pediatric Engagement & Development Strategies) Coaching Program. Our goal is to infuse a coaching mindset of non-judgmental curiosity and support throughout the department, creating a coaching culture.
Individual and group faculty coaching is available in the department. Consistent with International Coaching Federation (ICF) competencies, confidentiality, ethical practice, trust and safety, effective communication and the cultivation of learning and growth are the foundation.
