Benefits and Compensation
The NARI program provides opportunities to gain research experience in research and prepares students for advancing their academic and professional skills. The program also emphasizes community development by providing a space to talk and learn about identity, community, and Native American peoples in the STEM fields.
Stipend: Each NARI position is considered employment. Completion of work hours and assignments are required to receive up to $5,500 for the 10 week summer
Housing: Each participant is provided with apartment style housing with a private room and amenities, (including free laundry) on the University of Utah campus.
Travel: Non-local students will receive an advancement of their $5,500 stipend to cover transportation from SLC airport to and from the residence hall or other transportation.
National Conference Attendance: Opportunity to attend one or two health/scientific research related conferences during the Summer and Fall following the internship. In some cases registration and travel will be supported by the program.
Physician Shadowing Opportunities: If interested in clinical mentorship, participants can request a shadowing opportunity. Vaccination must be completed before internship starts (Tuberculosis screening, Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, and Rubella, Tdap, Varicella (Chickenpox), and Hepatitis B).
Additional Benefits: A University of Utah ID card, which will allow access to university libraries, use of computers on campus, and the campus shuttle. Students also have access to the gym, recreation center, public transportation, and equipment checkout at a reduced rate.
Mentorship: NARI Participants will have access to the network of the NARI Community which includes Native American faculty and staff at the University of Utah in areas of social work, medicine, dentistry, communications, Professors, PhD Mentors, and current graduate students. As well as peer to peer mentorship with other participants of the program past and present.
