Program Overview
The Genomics Summer Research for Minorities (GSRM) internship provides a ten- week summer research program for Junior and Senior undergraduate students interested in genomics research including ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) of genomics, personalized medicine and biosciences. The program is funded by the National Human Genome Research Institution (NHGRI) and supported by the University of Utah, Department of Pediatrics. The paid internship provides students with placement in world-class genomics research groups, tailored mentorship, professional development workshops and access to state-of-the-art equipment and technology. Interns have the opportunity to interact with a thriving community of scientists, physicians and mentors that recognize the need to promote diversity, inclusion and retention in STEM disciplines.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and a member of an underrepresented group (as defined by the National Institutes of Health). We particularly encourage the participation of women, individuals from racial and ethnic groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in health-related sciences, individuals with differently abled and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. - Be enrolled in a four-year college for Fall 2024, with a graduation date of December 2024 or later.
- Have completed their sophomore year before attending our GSRM program. Sophomore students are encouraged to apply.
- No previous research is required, but applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in genomics, bioinformatics, and precision medicine research.
- Have a strong interest in pursuing graduate school (PhD or MD/PhD).
- Must be available to work 40 hours per week Monday through Friday for a 10-week period, beginning May 29 and ending August 2, 2024
- Past GSRM students can be considered for a second summer track if they still meet all criteria mentioned above.
Benefits
GSRM internship provides opportunities to gain research experience in genomics research and prepares students for advancing their academic and professional skills. The program also emphasizes community development by providing a space to talk and learn about diversity and inclusion in the STEM fields.
Compensation: Interns will receive a generous compensation in the amount of $5,500 for the participation in this 10-week summer internship program. Participants will receive University of Utah ID cards which will allow them to check out books from University libraries, use computers on campus, receive discounts, etc.
Housing: Housing expenses will be covered by the internship program. Interns will be living in the residence halls at the University of Utah.
Travel Expenses: The GSRM program will support non-local students with travel and airline tickets to and from SLC. The program will provide ground transportation from SLC airport to and from the residence halls.
Attend a National Conference: Participants will have the opportunity to attend one or two health/scientific research related conferences. Registration and travel will be supported by the program.
Physician Shadowing Opportunities: If interested in clinical mentorship, participants can request a shadowing opportunity. Vaccination must be completed before internship starts (Tuberculosis screening, Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, and Rubella, Tdap, Varicella (Chickenpox), and Hepatitis B). We encourage you to seek your academic institution’s student clinics.
Program Expectations
- Time Commitment: This is a full-time program. Basic program requirements are that you will spend a minimum of 40 hours per week on research and program-related activities for the entire duration of the program. Research expectations and/or requirements will be determined between you and your faculty mentor.
- Weekly Meetings: Participants are expected to attend regular GSRM Mentor Lunch Seminars and Genomics Lecture Series in which they will present their research and advance their scientific knowledge.
- Program Events: Students are expected to attend all organized program meetings and events, including: opening and closing ceremony, program orientation, lab orientation, Grad School Mini-Expo and individual meeting with program training manager and principal investigator.
- Final Presentation: Participants are required to present their work in a poster format at the Summer Symposium organized by the Office of Undergraduate Research.
- Attend a Conference: Participants will submit a research abstract and travel scholarship application to participate in one or two national conferences selected by the program.
- Internship Report Submission: Participants are required to submit a one-page summary of their scientific and personal experience in the GSRM internship upon completion of the program.
- Complete Surveys: To evaluate the goals of the program and receive feedback, participants are required to submit pre and post GSRM internship surveys.
- All-Programs Socials (optional): Participants are encouraged to attend socials that are planned biweekly by GSRM and other formal summer programs on campus.
