Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship Overview
Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship Overview
The University of Utah is a national leader in pediatric critical care, providing critical care services across the Intermountain West. Our program includes over 30 clinical and research faculty with scholarly interests spanning the breadth of critical care medicine, impacting children locally, nationally, and internationally.
Critical Care Fellowship
Since its inception in 1988, the Pediatric Critical Care Medicine fellowship at the University of Utah places each fellow in a well-designed clinical and scholarly program, emphasizing skills for future academic success. Our trainees graduate ready to be outstanding clinicians and succeed in their specific area of interest whether that be research, education, quality improvement or administration.
We are committed to creating a learning environment where fellows can explore their individual interests and are supported as trainees and colleagues. We believe that our fellowship strikes the right balance between academic rigor and personal wellness.
Our program:
- Develops fellows into outstanding clinicians with expertise in pediatric critical care medicine
- Mentors fellows in the completion of a scholarly activity that includes presentation at a national conference and a publication of a final manuscript
- Exposes fellows to all aspects of academic medicine including research, education, quality improvement, and administration
- Encourages fellows to explore their passion within research, education, quality improvement, and administration
- Creates a scholarly environment where fellows can grow as ethical, principled, and self-motivated medical professionals

Scholarship
The best way for our fellows to learn the skills necessary for academic success is to design a scholarly program tailored to each fellow’s goals and passion. While scholarly experiences vary, all our fellows learn the skill, knowledge, and attitudes that are essential to the next step in their careers. All our fellows produce scholarly works are accepted for publication and presented at national meetings. Many fellows complete multiple projects during their fellowship.
Clinical Experience
As the main PICU for five states, we see everything. Primary Children’s Hospital is a busy trauma, transplant, and cardiac surgery center. Our fellows care for the most common of critical care illnesses as well as the rarest, using all advanced modalities.
